Notan Value Scale
Dianne invented this Notan Value Scale to offer a more descriptive language for recognizing and creating values. There are at least five degrees of value found in shadow and in areas not in shadow. Tradition value scales have referred to these with numbers where, on some scales 1 equals the darkest dark and 10, the lightest light. On other scales, the reverse is true. These two systems makes is difficult to refer to a values degree of darkness without confusing one school or the other.
Dianne’s practice of composing values according to the notan principle gave her the idea that a value scale could be created to reflect the degrees of darkness in the shadow side of notan and degrees of lightness in the light side. In her video lessons, she often refers to this scale, so decided to make it available free.
