Series 39: CREATING DISTANCE
Gradating with Color – S39L1
Download
This lesson is S39L, Gradating with Color of the CREATING DISTANCE Series. Using as her reference a distant mountain range, Dianne guides us through observing and interpreting how hue, value and intensity gradually change as they move into distance, whether in shadow or not in shadow.
As images move into a distance their characteristics gradually change. We will see value contrasts decreasing from strong to close, hues might gently merge from one to another, intensities often become more neutral, textures can progressively disappear, and sizes will steadily become smaller.
We can create distance in our paintings by creating these changes in our images. The four lessons in this series guide us in that direction.

Rather than becoming refined paintings, all these lessons are studies, each showing a different approach for using a composing principle. Dianne’s approach to teaching is to show you ways to think about making choices and decisions so that you can work these into your own unique approach to painting.
