S10 L1  Using Analogous Color Schemes

snippets from the video

In this lesson, S10L1 Using Analogous Color Schemes  of  our  TRANSPOSING COLOR series,  Dianne uses a summer landscape scene and transposes it to a fall scene using analogous colors built around the hue yellow.  This lesson is two-in-one:  not only does it teach how to transpose colors, it also shows a sound method for setting up an analogous palette.

Included with your download is a PDF of the finished version of this study done after the lesson was finished, along with a suggested assignment to help you to learn how to follow the process Dianne uses.  Like all our lessons, this one will help develop your decision-making skills.

When we switch our attention from what a subject is to how we compose it, we have unlimited potential for visual expression.  Transposing colors is wonderful composing tool.  Just the simple switch away from the identity of the subject expands the artist’s options.  Dianne hopes that this series will help to find clarity and self confidence as well as bring home a realization the your creativity is limited only by the limits you, yourself, put on it.

Among contemporary artists whose work reflects a confident use of transposing colors,  Margaret Kessler stands out as among the most adroit.  Take a look at her work HERE and her book, Color Harmony HERE.   Also, you can see examples of how Dianne works with transposing color, especially in backgrounds, by visiting her Earth’s Flora and Fauna page
